STRATEGIES
Student strategies for in-class language learning improvement:
Speaking
· Answer as fully as possible when the teacher asks direct questions
· Speak English with other students in the class
· Try to answer teacher questions during whole class discussions. (Put up your hand to show you are ready to try.)
· Speak during pair work, small group discussions and group work
· Ask teacher, ESL Assistant or other students for help when needed
Listening
· Sit where you can hear the teacher well
· Listen attentively during teacher presentations and class discussions
· Listen attentively to the contributions of other students in class
· Write down words in English or first language when listening in class
Reading
· Read out loud in class when asked
· Use a translating dictionary/translator to assist in understanding new words in assigned readings
· Identify new words in assigned readings for further vocabulary study at home or in ESL tutorial time
· Ask for help when needed to understand new words or phrases in readings
· Read assigned work more than once
Writing
· Do your best to thoroughly complete writing assignments
· Use a word processor and dictionary when completing writing assignments
· Proofread written work to make it as clear and correct as possible
· Ask for help or extra time to complete writing assignments
· Have ESL coordinator or assistant edit written assignments
· Review and/or rewrite marked written work at home to understand grammatical errors
